So uhm, last weekend I decided not to go out because, you know, I’m quite tired from, uh, working my ass off the whole week. I kinda wanted only to like curl up on my bed and read a book or something. And probably watch some episodes of a TV series that I, uhm, sort of have been following for quite a while.
そう、うーん。先週は仕事がとても忙しくてすごく疲れたから休日は外出しないことに決めたの。ベッドの上で丸くなったり、本を読んだりとかしたかったの。うーんと、それかずっと見てるテレビドラマのシリーズものの何話かを見るわ。
My friends wanted to meet but I declined because like I said I was exhausted and, you know, not in the mood. I mean it’s not like I’m gonna waste my day if I won’t go out, right?
私の友達が遊びたいって言ってくれたけど、私はへとへとに疲れてるし今はそんな気分ではないことを伝えて断ってしまいました。もし出かけなかったら私の1日が無駄になるってことはないじゃない？
So what did you notice in my speech? Have you noticed the uhs and uhms, the you knows and I means and so on and so forth?
そう、私のスピーチに何か気がつきましたか？uhsやuhms、you knowやI meanなどに気づいていましたか？
These are what we call Filler Words or simply Fillers. According to Wikipedia, a filler is a word or a sound that is spoken in conversation by a speaker to signal to others that he or she has paused to think and has not yet finished speaking.
それらを私たちはFiller Wordsやsimply Fillersと呼んでいます。Wikipediaによると、Fillerとは会話の中で話し手が考える間会話を止めたりまだ話すのが終わってないことを他の人に知らせるサインとして使われる言葉や音のことです。
Fillers are actually meaningless and is often used by native speakers to give themselves more time to find the right words that they’re looking for and to gather their complete thought and idea.
Fillerには実際に意味はなく、ネイティブスピーカーが単文や考えを寄せ集める際、適した言葉を見つけるのに少し時間が必要なときによく使われます。
However, it’s not advisable to use filler words in formal conversation, like if you’re in a job interview. Chances are you’re not going to get the job that you’re applying for.
But if you really wanna talk like a native speaker, you gotta familiarize some fillers.
しかしながら、フォーマルな会話、特に仕事の面接の時にはfiller wordsは使わないのが望ましいです。使ってしまうとチャンスを逃してしまうかもしれません。しかし、もしも本当にネイティブのような話し方をしたいのであれば、Fillersに慣れなくてはいけません。
(1) You Know だよね
“Maybe she thought I’m a creep. But really, I just wanted to bring her flowers and take her out on a date, you know?”
多分、彼女は私がコソコソしているなと思ったでしょう。でも実は、彼女に花を渡してデートに誘いたかったんだよね。
“My friend invited me to skydive this weekend and I readily agreed. I mean it’s not like every day that you get to skydive, you know?”
友達が今週末スカイダイビングに誘ってくれて、私はすぐに同意しました。スカイダイビングなんてめったにできることじゃないじゃない？
(2) Uhm/Ah うーん
“So tell me, what makes life worth living?”
ねぇ、何に生きがいを感じる？
“Uhh, that’s a great question. Uhm, I think what makes life worth living are, uh, the simple things in life like, uhm, family. But ah, not only family but also, uh, the relationships you develop with each member of your family. And, uhm, also Love and Friendship.”
うーん、それはとっても良い質問ですね。うーん、私は何が生きがいを感じる、うーん、生きがい、うーん、家族ですかね。でも家族だけではなくて他にも、うーん、あなたが築いてきた関係や家族の一人ひとりかな。それと、うーん、恋愛や友達もかな。
“Jass, where do you want to go for dinner?”
ジャス、どこにディナーに行きたいですか？
“Uhmm, the Blue Elephant?”
うーん、ブルーエレファント？
“You sure?”
本当に？
“Yeah. Do you have another place in mind?
うん、どこか他にある？
(3) Like ～のよう
“So how was your date last night?”
そう、昨日の夜のデートはどうだった？
“It was pretty fine.”
とても良かったよ。
“Fine?! Is that how you would describe it?”
良かった？！それはどう良かったの？
“Yeah, it was just fine. Like I did not really expect much about it in the first place. I mean he was like very handsome and a real gentleman but I don’t think we hit it off. He’s a good catch but like I don’t think he’s the one for me.”
うん、ただただ良かったよ。例えば、最初に本当に期待していなかったの。つまり、彼が本当にハンサムで本当に紳士的のような人でも私は彼とうまくやっていけると思わないの。彼は良い人です、でも彼は私にはふさわしくないと思うの。
(4) I Mean つまり
“If your house is on fire and your laptop is inside, would you run in and get it?”
もしも、あなたの家が火事にあって家の中にパソコンがあるとしたら、走って取りに行きますか？
“No, I wouldn’t. I mean, who would right? Life is more important than just material things. I could just replace it in the future.”
それはしません。誰ができる？命は物よりも大切です。だって物は今後置き替えがきくんだから。
“Did you ask permission from your mother?”
お母さんに許可もらえるか聞いてみた？
“No. I mean, she would not get angry, right? Right? I mean I was…”
いいえ、つまり、お母さんは怒らないよね？ね？つまり私は、、
“Oh no! Your mom is on the phone!”
あれ！あなたのお母さんに電話つながってる！
“Oh no! I am so done!”
嘘でしょ！もう終わった！
(5) Like I Said 今言ったように、さっきも［前にも］言ったけど
“Like I said before, it’s not up to you to decide about these matters.”
前にも言ったけど、それらの問題を決断するのはあなた次第ではありません。
“Do you think you can finish the job in a week?”
この仕事を一週間以内に終えられると思いますか？
“Like I said I am quite good with time management. Rest assured that I can finish the job.”
前にも言ったように、私は時間の管理が得意です。この仕事を終えられるので安心してください。
“I am counting on you!”
頼りにしてます！
(6) OK, so… じゃあ
“Okay so what you’re saying is you did not go to college simply because you don’t like going. Is that it?”
じゃあ、あなたが言いたいのは大学に行きたくなかったからただ行かなかったってことだよね？
“Okay, so let me introduce to you your new English teacher.”
じゃあ、あなたの新しい英語の先生を紹介するわ。
“Okay so, does this mean I have to attend the meeting?”
じゃあ、これはつまり私が会議に出席しなければいけないということですか？
