Idioms are a group of words which have a meaning which isn’t obvious from looking at the individual words. One thing we should remember in understanding English idioms is that we should not take them or read them in a literal sense. You might find them so random, but learning them is essential for you to understand and participate well in most everyday conversation, like if you’re drinking beer with friends, going to a baseball game, or having a dinner date with someone. There are thousands of idioms in the English language but in this video, we are going to learn some of the commonly used English idioms. Are you guys ready? イディオムとは？ イディオムはそれぞれの単語を見ても意味が読み取れない、言葉のグループとして意味をなすものです。ひとつ私たちが覚えておかなければいけないことは、英語のイディオムは文字通りの意味でとらえないことです。イディオムは様々なところで見られると思いますが、それらを学ぶことはあなたが友達とビールを飲んでいるとき、野球の試合に行くとき、誰かとディナーデートをするとき等、日々の会話を理解し自分も話すために不可欠なことです。英語には1000ものイディオムがありますが、このビデオではよく使われるイディオムを学んでいきましょう。準備はいいですか？ (1) Hit the Sacks “Thea, let’s go grab some beer!” セア、ビール飲みに行こうよ！ “What time is it? Oh my gosh, it’s past midnight already. I did not notice the time. Sorry but I have to hit the sack now. I have an early exam tomorrow! Next time?” 何時？うわぁ、もう深夜0時回ってるよ。時間に気づかなかった。ごめん、私寝ないと。明日早朝にテストがあるの。次の機会にしてくれる？ “Oh okay. I might just be drinking alone. Bye!” わかった。一人で飲むわ。バイバイ！ Hit the sack? What could it possibly mean? If we take it literally, it could mean physically hitting or beating the sack. However, hit the sack means to go to bed. You use this in telling your friends or family that you are tired and wants to sleep. Hit the sack? どんな意味でしょう？直訳するとザックを叩く、当たるとなります。しかしHit the sackとは寝る・床に就くという意味です。疲れているとき、眠い時に友達や家族に使ってみましょう。 (yawns) I’m so tired. I’m going to hit the sack now. Good night! （あくび）疲れた～。今から寝るわ。おやすみ！   Hit the Books (2) “Oh hi there! I’m so busy, I have to hit the books. I have a very long exam tomorrow and I have to pass it or my mother will cut my allowance.” やぁ、元気？わたしとても忙しいの。勉強しないといけなくて。明日すごく長い試験があって合格しないとお母さんがおこずかい減らすって言うの。 Hit the books means not to literally hitting someone with a book. It simply means to study. You really have to hit your books or else you are going to fail your exam. Hit the booksとは文字通り誰かを本で叩くことではありません。単純に「勉強をする」という意味です。あなたは本当に勉強しないと試験に落ちますよ。 Under the Weather (3) “Hi Thea! We’re going out tonight. You wanna come?” やぁ、セア！今夜出かけるんだけど、来る？ “Oh no! Sorry.” あぁ、ごめん。 “Why? What’s wrong with you?” なんで？どうしたの？ “I’m under the weather. I’m not really in the mood to go out.” わたしすごい疲れてて。出かける気分じゃないんだよね。 “Oh okay. Bye!” わかった。じゃあね。 Under the weather means to feel sick, in poor health, tired, or exhausted. So the next time someone asks you how you are doing and you are not really in the mood for anything because you’re tired or feeling sick, you can say “I’m under the weather”, instead of the usual way of saying “I’m not okay”, or “I’m feeling sick.” Under the weatherとは気分がすぐれない、体調が悪い、だるい、疲れているという意味です。 気分が悪い、体調がすぐれないの変わりにI’m under the weather.　と言うことができます。   Ring a Bell (4) Another common idiom in English conversation is “ring a bell”. The literal meaning would have you imagine a bell ringing. But no no, ring a bell means “to sound familiar”. If something rings a bell, it reminds you of something you have heard before, though you may not be able to remember it very well. For example: もうひとつの英会話でよく使われるイディオムに“ring a bell”.があります。文章から鐘が鳴っているのが想像できますよね。でも違います。ring a bellは「聞いたことがある」という意味です。鐘が鳴ると同時に前に聞いたことがある何かを思い出すような、でもはっきりと覚えていない様子です。 “The name “Audrey Hepburn” sounds familiar. It rings a bell. Ah yes! She was a Hollywood actress.” オードリーヘップバーンって聞いたことあるな。ピントきた！そう！彼女はハリウッド女優だ。 But when you can’t seem to remember anything from what a person tells you, you can say “I’m sorry that doesn’t ring a bell with me.” しかし人が何とあなたに伝えたか思い出せないとき、ごめんなさい。なんだか思い出せないの。と言うことができます。   Look a million dollars (5) The last on our list is “look a million dollars”. I think this one speaks for itself. Look a million dollars means “to look extremely attractive”. For example, “Wow! You look like a million dollars in that dress!”. This means that the woman you are talking to looks very attractive or beautiful in her dress. So the next time you go out on a date with someone you can compliment the person by saying he or she looks like a million dollars! This will surely brighten up the person’s day! 最後は“look a million dollars”.です。“look a million dollars”. はものすごく魅力的に見えることです。例えば「わぁ！あなたのそのドレスものすごく魅力的！」となります。この意味はその女性のドレスがとても美しい、魅力的ということです。次回あなたが誰かとデートをするとき彼女または彼にあなたはとても魅力的よ！とほめてみてください。その人の一日がきっと輝きますよ！ That would be all for the today’s idioms.
